Is it okay for Christians to drink and serve alcohol?
I am always asked this question by "well meaning" Christians.
From a person who loved to drink alcohol and knowing the feeling I got from even my first sip, I have no qualms about my firm belief that alcohol is demonic in nature, because it appeals to the lower nature of the human being.
I checked the definition of the word (alcohol) and here is Webster's Encyclopedic Unabridged Dictionary's definition of ALCOHOL...Also called ethyl, ethanol, fermentation, spirits of wine, volatile, water-miscible liquid, burning taste, having an ether-like odor and pungent burning taste, the intoxicating principle of fermented liquors produced by yeast fermentation of certain carbohydrates, any intoxicating liquor contains this spirit.
I see the word spirits and I ask.....why the producers of the dictionary would call wine a spirit? Then I ask is it a good spirit? The answer is absolutely NO!
The next question I ask is why would anybody want to drink wine, beer or any type of alcohol? The answer is because they want to get High! Some argue the doctor say wine is good for you. What about the carbohydrate content, not to mention the other stuff alcohol is made of, ethyl, ethanol, etc? Let's be real here. God is not mocked. Some argue the doctor say wine is good for you. Some argue that Paul said to Timothy to drink a little wine for his upset stomach and his often infirmities (2 Timothy 5/23). Let's think of this seriously. You have an upset stomach and chug down a glass of wine. How does it make you feel? Paul also said (be not drunk with wine wherein is excess, but be filled with the Holy Spirit (Ephesians 5/18). Paul also said the Bishop must be blameless, not given to wine (I Timothy 3/2-3). Okay here is the real kicker....this is the favorite argument... Jesus turned water into wine at the wedding. Now for serious thought. First off, Jesus' human heritage was of a Priestly nature (see the book of Hebrews). The Priest Aaron was commanded by God, that neither he nor his sons should drink neither wine nor strong drink, when they go into the tabernacle of the congregation. If they did, they would die. The reason is so that they may put difference between holy and unholy, clean and unclean. Would Jesus do something contrary to His nature and priestly deity, which would cause people to behave in the very manner He told them not to? Could you see Jesus getting drunk with His disciples? When I used to drink, I tried to imagine this as an excuse and could not envision Jesus drinking wine. My brain even while HIGH could not see Jesus drinking alcohol. There are many articles available on the internet now, where people have researched the wine or strong drink that was served in the days when Jesus Christ walked the earth.
The bible speaks of not doing anything that will cause another to stumble. 1 Peter chapter 1 verse 14-16, warns, as obedient children, not shaping up our way of living according to the former lusts in our ignorance, but as He (Jesus Christ), which has called us is holy, so be ye holy in all manner of living. Because it is written, be ye holy, for I am holy. Romans 14/21 says it is good neither to eat flesh, nor drink wine nor anything whereby thy brother stumbles, or is offended, or is made weak. My take on alcohol is do not drink and do not offer it to anyone. Why? Okay, let's say you have a party and you serve alcohol and the people get into an accident on their way home after your party, and is maimed for life or killed, or kill someone in their drunkenness, and you were told that it is because the driver was drinking at your party. How would you feel? The statistics are very high, perhaps the highest now, regarding deaths caused by driving accidents and suicide after the consumption of alcohol. Habakkuk chapter 2/15 Woe unto them that give their neighbor drink, that put thy bottle to him, and make him drunken also, that you may look on their nakedness.
Shalom to all who believe
